What is ‘Logistics'?
- To put it simply- in the world of business, ‘logistics’ refers to the coordination function of an organization that’s responsible for commercially transporting good/services to fulfil customer requirements in terms of time and place. Logistics puts goods or people at the right place, at the right time.
- At its most basic definition, logistics involves the distribution of a product. It is essentially about getting the right product, to the right customer, in the right quantity, in the right condition, at the right place, at the right time, and at the right cost (commonly known as the seven R’s of Logistics).
What is 'Supply Chain'?
- ‘Supply Chain’ refers to the network of business activities that maximizes customer value.
- A supply chain is a system of organizations, people, activities, information, and resources that are involved in moving a product or service from supplier to customer.
- This includes the product or service development from the very beginning of its lifecycle all the way to distribution to the final consumer.
What’s the difference between ‘logistics’ and ‘supply chain management’?
- Supply chain management is a cross-functional approach that includes managing the movement of raw materials into an organisation, certain aspects of the internal processing of materials into finished goods, and the movement of finished goods out of the organisation and toward the end consumer.
- Logistics is the smaller sibling of Supply Chain Management that deals with management of goods in an efficient way.
- Logistics can be divided into two categories:
- Inbound Logistics covers all the activities needed for the procurement of needed materials, handling, storage and transportation.
- Outbound Logistics involves the collection, maintenance and delivery of products to the customer.
